Open Science
Open science is a set of principles, practices and shared values that aim to make scientific research from all fields accessible to everyone for the benefits of scientists and society as a whole. Open science is about making sure not only that scientific knowledge is accessible but also that the production of that knowledge itself is inclusive, equitable and sustainable.
In line with this definition, DSWB has been established to create a sustainable and collaborative environment for applying data science in African health institutions in ways that:
- Increase scientific collaborations and sharing of information for the benefit of science and society.
- Make multilingual scientific knowledge openly available, accessible and reusable for everyone.
- Open the processes of scientific knowledge creation, evaluation and communication to societal actors beyond the traditional scientific community.
Our Open Science Goals at DSWB
- Promote accessibility and transparency in research by adopting open tools and practices.
- Train the next generation of data scientists on open science principles to maximise the benefits of data science.
- Encourage the reuse and repurposing of existing research and technologies to accelerate innovation in African health research.
- Support the development and sharing of research methods, data, tools, and resources that can be openly verified, reproduced, and reused.
- Foster an open and collaborative community that engages with health researchers across African countries.
The collaborating institutions, OSPO Now, LSHTM and CODATA, are supporting these goals in DSWB.
Open Science Ecosystem

Open Access
Publish your research outputs openly. DSWB uses the Open Access policy of Wellcome Trust.
Open, Reproducible & Ethical Research Practices
Learn about these practices, see recommendations and practical resources in The Turing Way guides.
FAIR Principles
Make your research objects “as open as possible, as closed as necessary” by following FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) principles.
Research Data Management (RDM)
Store, describe, share and reuse research data using RDM best practices.
Training & Collaboration on Open Science
Join the Open Science and Capacity Building Working Group in DSWB.
Open Source
Develop and share repositories with reusable datasets, models, tools and documentation openly on GitHub.
The Open Science & Capacity Building Working Group

The Open Science and Capacity Building Working Group supports the DSWB community in the adoption of open science practices and approaches in their work.
