Open Science & Capacity Building Working Group

The Open Science and Capacity Building Working Group supports the DSWB community in the adoption of open science practices and approaches in their work. This Working Group provides a dedicated forum and opportunities for open communication and knowledge exchange, allowing members to openly discuss their projects, identify emerging needs, challenges, or opportunities, and facilitate access to the resources within DSWB necessary for building shared solutions.

Our goal is to ensure that the many moving parts of DSWB fit together as a cohesive whole through active involvement and engagement from our diverse community.

Community of Practice

Foster a community of Practice for DSWB members to work together in strengthening data science and AI skills, resources, infrastructure and communities in Africa.

The Turing Way Guides

We refer to The Turing Way for curating and sharing best practices with and by the DSWB members.

Open Ways of Working

We adopt open ways of working in DSWB, drawing practices and examples from open science communities and projects.

Training & Workshops

Design and deliver training and workshops to build skills in line with open, reproducible and ethical data science and AI.

Open Development & Sharing

Support the development, maintenance, and sharing of research outputs through platforms such as GitHub, Zenodo, and other open avenues.

Regular Meetings

Facilitate active engagement communication among DSWB members through fortnightly meetings, weekly coworking calls and relevant events.

The OSPO Now team is organising and supporting different activities within this Working Group.

You can reach out to them by emailing hello@osponow.com. The project promotes open science principles and aims to create a central repository for data sharing and collaboration.

The Turing Way

The Turing Way is an open science, open collaboration, and community-driven project. It is used, maintained, and supported by a diverse community that engages and supports both new and existing contributors to make data science accessible, comprehensible, and effective in their respective contexts. The goal is to provide researchers, data scientists, software engineers, policymakers, and other practitioners in academia, industry, government, and the public sector with the resources they need to ensure that the projects they work on are easy to reproduce and reuse.

People with any level of experience in data science or domain expertise are encouraged to use The Turing Way to understand their roles and responsibilities of reproducibility in data science and research. You can review our resources on GitHub, contribute to the project as described in our contribution guidelines and re-use all materials.

Communities of Practice

The Data Science Without Borders (DSWB) Communities of Practice (CoP) is a key component of DSWB, providing a dedicated forum for open communication among all partners about their projects, their needs or challenges, and shared access to DSWB resources at every stage, helping ensure that the many moving parts of DSWB fit together as a cohesive whole. All DSWB members are invited to participate and encouraged to share their research projects as openly as possible, exchange ideas, discuss data science and AI skills, identify new opportunities for collaboration, build shared resources, and embed open and collaborative approaches to their work.

As a community, we have bi-weekly meetings, regular coworking calls, and async communication channels like Discord to enable constant communication and ensure we are all up-to-date. You can find out about our projects on our GitHub page or send an email to the DSWB team: hello@osponow.com.

Current Opportunities to Engage With CoP

As a CoP member, you are encouraged to suggest new activities, resources, and support.
